This month's Athlete Spotlight is on Bill Sanchez. Bill has been a faithful Cobalt member for just about a year, and we've watched him grow stronger mentally and physically this whole time, all with that infectious smile of his. He was one of our first "Grouponers" and stuck with us all the way through. Bill comes in every day ready to tackle the WOD and support fellow members. He likes to tell us coaches we're crazy but always finishes strong :)
We're proud to have members like Bill that continue to make us proud, and remind us how important and special it is to have built this community together.
Q: Name, and tell us a little about yourself, what do you like to do outside the gym?
A: Bill Sanchez, I have lived in Babylon Village for 20 years, I am married with 2 girls in college, ages 20 and 18. (I know what your thinking, I must have been 12 when they were born, right - LOL). I work for Veolia Environmental Services in Wantagh, NY. We provide Chemical Recycling and Disposal Services for all types of industries. I like to say "I Save the Planet!". I am also an Independent Associate for Isagenix, we supply Nutritional Cleansing and Weight Loss Products. I love spending time on the boat and at the beach in the summer and I love to Snowboard in the winter. I am also a little bit of a sports fanatic and a licensed USCG Captain.
Q: How long have you been crossfitting?
A: I have been crossfitting for just about a year now. I started my OnRamp in November, 2013 and did my first WOD right before Thanksgiving.
Q: What is your favorite/ most memorable WOD?
A: There have been so many, its hard to pinpoint. But I have to say, doing Grace for the first time at Barbells for Boobs was pretty awesome. In addition, my first RX Fran was a great moment for me. Especially considering I could barely do a pull-up when I started at Cobalt.
Q: What is your current Fran time? Goal time?
A: I Did my first RX Fran on 5/30 in 8:03. My goal is to shave 30 seconds to a minute next time around.
Q: What are your short-term goals? Long term?
A: Short term goals are to do HSPU's without pads. I started with 3 and am down to 1 or 2 depending on the WOD. I also want to do ring dips without a band for an entire WOD. Long term goal would be bar muscle ups.
Q: What keeps you coming back day after day?
A: I love getting that e-mail every day with the WOD. Sometimes I say "WTF, are they crazy?" But there I am showing up anyway. There is so much support from all the coaches and members. When I can't make it for a few days, I actually miss it! That never happened happened at Globo Gym. I am typically there in the evening and its great to see so many of the same faces every day, keeping each other motivated and having fun. There is so much Camaraderie, everybody routing for one another and cheering each-other on!
Q: What is your most memorable moment with CrossFit Cobalt?
A. It was probably my first workout after my OnRamp. It was a Jailhouse of HSPU's and Burpees. I will never forget it. I was like WTF am I doing here? I could not do one HSPU, never mind 55! I had never even tried. Yet Reuben, who was the coach and the other guys in the class were so encouraging and patient with me. Even though I had to do pike's, I still finished last and the others were cheering me on, encouraging me to chip away. I thought I was going to die, but at the same time thought it was pretty cool.
Q: What has CrossFit done for you?
A. At the start, I really wasn't sure if CF was for me. Some of the workouts and moves looked so intimidating. I had never worked out so intensely. I was one of those guys that would go to the gym, do some cardio and watch TV with my headphones on for 30-45 minutes, throw some weights around and watch the clock to see when that hour was up. After being at Cobalt for almost a year, I never want to go back. I now workout minus the headphones with a whole group of great people, competing, working out at different levels, cheering each-other on and having fun. It truly is a community and everyone at Cobalt is awesome. I have drank the Kool Aid and I am hooked. My mental outlook has changed, the way I workout has changed and my body has changed, all for the better. Its been a great ride! I can't wait to start Year 2 at CF Cobalt! Thanks for having me!
