Athlete Spotlight Of The Month

     Not all transformations are through weight loss and inches, some are improvements in quality of life. That is exactly the case with our Athlete of the Month, Joe Candiano. On the day CrossFit Cobalt opened its doors over a year ago, Candiano showed up as a slight shade of yellow (due to smoking) and looking to get back into shape. He mentioned that back in high school, he was an avid lifter and was able to deadlift 500# (an impressive feat) but stopped due to excessive back injuries. We told Candiano that with a little CrossFit magic, we would get him lifting close to that 500lbs deadlift again. 


     After just two weeks of CrossFit there was a visual difference in Candiano's appearance. He walked into the gym looking healthier and happier, glowing with a normal flesh colored tone. Soon after, we asked Candiano to sign up for the CrossFit games, and he rose to the occasion by snatching 135lbs over his head. 

     It is truly amazing to see how CrossFit has captivated Candiano, just as it has each of us and all of our coaches. He continues to make great strides in improving and is becoming a healthier person every day. I can also proudly say that Joe MANDIANO PR’d his deadlift this month at 455lbs, quickly approaching that 500lbs goal!

 

Q: Name, and tell us a little about yourself?

A: 35 years old. Operations Supervisor for a medical equipment company in Farmingdale... live in West Babylon, graduated from WBHS class of 97. Once an eagle, always an eagle. Don’t hate.

 

Q: How long have you been crossfitting?

A: Proud to be one of cobalt's OG's, so been at it since early February 2013. (day after I gave up smoking after 13 years holler)

 

Q: What is your favorite/ most memorable WOD?

A: Favorite WOD is Diane or King Kong. dig them both pretty equally...

 

Q: What is your current Fran time? Goal time?

A: Current Fran time is 5:45 (Oct 1, 2013)... goal time is in the neighborhood of 3 min (once I conquer the elusive butterfly pull-up).

 

Q: What are your short-term goals? Long term?

A: Short term goals- butterfly pull-ups. Long term goals- regional masters champ age 45-50 hahaha... jk, just to continue to get better everyday and as I get older still be able to say "I’m this age, and in the best shape of my life"

 

Q: What keeps you coming back day after day?

A: I hate to sound like every crossfit profile I have ever read but it really is just getting a little better/stronger everyday. Crossfit brought back the competitive spirit I had when I was younger, playing sports wanting to win all the time (which never really happened but always wanted to)... but instead of beating an individual (although always cool when that happens in competition) beating a previous time I had or just knowing I left it all out there on the floor is personal satisfaction enough... and the team aspect of crossfit like most, brings me back. I like pushing others through a workout, as I like being pushed by others where I can always squeeze out an extra 2-5 reps with someone screaming to "pick up the f*cking bar Joe!!!"

 

Q: What is your most memorable moment with CrossFit Cobalt?

A: The first WOD I ever did was Cindy and my score was 9+1... I did it a year later w a 45lb vest on (thank you Joe Murphy) and completed 13 rounds. for me, that was pretty cool to see how far I came in a year. So I’d have to say that was a pretty memorable moment for me.
